Gary Green This page features bicycles used mostly for hauling cargo including from camping gear to groceries to large boxes or bulky items. There are a lot of cool designs and heavy-duty frames. There are not a lot of people manufacturing these types of bikes. And honestly in all my years living on the earth i have never seen anyone riding one of these cargo bikes on public streets and anywhere else. I'll bet one of these bikes would work great for a person who had a newspaper route and needed to carry a load of folded newspapers to deliver to homes. Also, coming to this website in the future will be an expanded line of people type hauling bicycles similar to what one might find in the Philipines or some other Asian country . . .

  1. Cetma Cargo Bikes CETMA CARGO   Check out this new cargo bike and related from Cetma. According to them they is doing a hefty business. "CETMA cargo bikes are hand-built by one person in a small shop in Oregon. Honest care and dedication goes into each bike to provide a high-quality, functional, and innovative American made machine. The CETMA cargo bike stands proudly as a homegrown alternative to overseas imports and factory built "work" bikes."

  2. Madison Cycles MADSEN CYCLES   This bicycle company is based in Salt Lake City, Utah. They call their line of bikes "Urban Utility". Bicycles for Utility, Cargo and Transportation. "After hauling six neighbor kids around in a wheel barrow bucket bolted to the front of our first prototype, we started to realize what a bicycle can really do. But the bucket on the front, like the box of the European design, creates an awkward center of gravity. So we stretched the chassis and put the bucket on the back. With the natural feel and balance of the rear bucket, you can ride with confidence knowing your load is secure and your cargo is protected. Our production models have come a long way since that first prototype but our mission has stayed the same; a bicycle should do more. We are not the first to place a load on a bicycle but we are the first to do it right. Tested for up to 600 pounds, the Madsen kg271 is as burly as it is elegant. So whether you use your Madsen Cycle to drop the kids off at soccer practice, pick up your groceries from the market, or pile in your tools for your next project, we hope you'll fall in love with your new Madsen Cycle—like we have."

  3. Xtracycle XTRACYCLE   The picture on the right is of my own bicycle - a Giant Cypress 2006 model 700c Hybrid with attached Xtracycle kit or add-on. With this particular configuration the bike is good for hauling light loads like 4 bags of groceries, etc. The bike frame is too light for prolong heavy loads in my opinion. The frame has a tendency to twist laterally when heavily loaded. If you want the capacity to haul heavy loads; i would recommend using a bicycle with a heavy frame, not a flimsy 700c hybrid. But, i do not haul very many heavy items; so my bike is perfect for me. I very much so like the Xtracycle set-up. It is extremely useful to me as i do not own a vehicle of any kind - just bicycles. I can haul my dirty laundry to the laundrymat with no problem. Buy and haul my groceries to my unit where i live or any other relatively light load. I have hauled small amounts of lumber and steel. Works great and the Xtracycle is highly configurable to suit your needs. "Imagine your favorite bike with the rear wheel stretched out behind the seat, a big, stable platform for a load or a passenger, and elegant saddlebags on either side that are expandable when you need them and are cleanly out of the way when you don't. Best of all, your bike is still lightweight and fast, and because the load is centered between your two wheels, the whole package handles with ease. Suddenly, you have much less need or desire to drive around town for your errands. Picture this: riding breezily unloaded to your favorite grocery store, coasting reliably around corners; arriving ahead of traffic; parking at the rack directly in front of the entrance; shopping and easily loading your four bags of groceries; then pedaling home, care-free on a bike that handles just as swiftly now that it's loaded."

  4. HammerTruck HAMMERTRUCK   This is a hefty hauler. Unique frame design makes pedaling easier.

"Go everywhere, everyday, and haul everything. The HammerTruck is a cargo hauler designed from the ground up incorporating our Crankforward design. As a Crankforward, it is an ideal package, since the lower seat and top tube height allows for easier mounting, controlling the bike at stop signs, and handling when loaded. At InterBike many cyclist instantly recognized the merits of using Crankforward design for a heavy hauler and took the "HammerTruck Challenge". The bike was loaded 10 one-gallon water jugs, for an 80-pound load. Everyone was able to ride the bike back up the steep hill, and returned with positive comments about the smooth handling, great power transfer, plus the climb ability of the Crankforward position. We never told them there was any issue with standing and riding, and I observed many first time riders of CF taking to it naturally, the B-37 handlebars and curved riser placed forward make for a very inviting space to get off the seat and hammer it."

  6. Silk road EXPEDITION BIKES   Expedition bikes are a class unto themselves and i will not include any more information about them other than this link. And also this link to peter white cycles. "Top-end expedition bikes are designed, and in most cases made-to-order, by a small number of companies that really understand the needs of adventure cyclists. These are robust, well-made bikes that will carry you and all your gear around the world on the roughest of tracks and still be ready for more. What you get for your money is: a tourer designed around 26" wheels; a great frame, in some cases made-to-measure; high standard of components; great build quality; a ready-to-go bike, no upgrades needed; personal service; great after sales support. The only downside with these machines is the price. In choosing one of these bikes, the main decisions you will be faced with are: Whether to have a Derailleur or Rohloff Speedhub gearing. Whether you want front suspension. How much hi-tech componentry you want e.g. hydraulic or cable brakes, rim or disc brakes. You also need to consider, how much equipment comes as standard, e.g. water bottle cages, pedals, pumps, etc and how much is extra."

  7. Henry Work Cycles HENRY WORKCYCLES   This is another dutch bicycle company. These bicycles seem to me to have a very unique european look to them. Nice bikes.

  8. Yuba Mundo YUBA MUNDO CARGO BICYCLE   This is a heavy-duty bicycle used for domestic hauling. I think it is also available in Africa somewhere. "Yuba manufactures and designs bicycles for transport and sustainable transportation: utility bicycle, cargo bike & commuter bike". This is a pretty neat and enthusiastic outfit. "Designed for maximum bicycle mobility, the all-terrain Mundo offers an affordable and sustainable alternative for:
    • environmentally friendly transportation.
    • economic viability.
    • unsurpassed cargo capacity.
    • the ability to carry passengers.
    • affordable mobility."

  10. Surly Big Dummy SURLY BIKES   This is a heavy-duty personal hauling bike. Replaces a car or truck probably. "The Big Dummy was a natural. It's designed to carry a lot of stuff easily, and that's just what it does. It was designed in conjunction with Xtracycle, whose modular plug-ins make it easy to carry groceries, garden supplies, tools, and just about anything else you'd normally carry with a car. It's got an upper limit of 400 pounds (180kg) total rider and cargo weight, which is more than you'll probably need, but not so much it's impossible to pedal. It does ride a bit different than normal bikes, due in large part to its long wheelbase, but a couple of trips to the store is all it should take to convince you that this bike is not only exceptionally useful, but fun too. We include Xtracycle's V-Rack bags and snapdeck, but you'll find more options for attachments, like Wideloader platforms, on Xtracycle's website: www.xtracycle.com."
